Searching for the right property can be stressful, especially in such a competitive market with huge choice,
Working out your budget is import  before looking for Property to rent. Be realistic, and remember renting property is not just paying rent, there will be other costs to maintain e.g. Council tax which varies on the price band of the property you are occupying, utility bills for gas, electricity, and water.
Once your budget has been figured out, make sure you keep to it! Letting Agents can tend to throw you off course, by offering nicer and bigger property to make more money out of you- so be prepared to be firm and stand ground and not be swayed from your budget plan!!
Also plan the length of stay you want in your new property. If you want long-term rental make sure the lease is long-term.
Once you are prepared it's time to begin searching for your property. Are you searching in a familiar area you know, or are you moving to a new area?
Generally, keep you feet on the ground and look for the things that could be wrong, as opposed to getting sucked in and enthused about the frilly pretty curtains that the letting agent is singing and dancing about!  If a property rental or lease looks to good to be true it probaly is.
